Portage approves residential abatements

PORTAGE — The City Council this week approved action that could spur development in the Marina Shores area.

The council declared the area just south of U.S. 12 and west of Ind. 249 an economic development target area. That will allow people wanting to build a residential building to apply for a five-year graduated tax abatement. Builders have 18 months to apply for the abatement.

It is the first time the city has granted a request to create a residential tax abatement area.
